Sci-fi shooter running on GZDoom

Selaco is a premium action game for PC developed by Altered Orbit Studios. It's a sci-fi-themed FPS title that is running on the GZDoom, a game engine that's based on enhanced ports of ZDoom, which itself is based on the original Doom engine that came out in the 90s.

Before the impressive Doom franchise reboot back in 2016, prior releases and mods like Doom 3 essentially ran on enhanced versions of the same game engine. Selaco utilizes an enhanced and community-developed version of it that included modern editing features and assured compatibility with all major operating systems.

Is that game any good?

Selaco is a sci-fi shooter that draws inspiration from classic games of the past for its gameplay. Its custom AI was influenced by that of the F.E.A.R series and its clever and well-thought-out design. Meanwhile, its action-packed shootout sequences are more akin to traditional shooters like QUAKE or DOOM. It also adds modern touches of its own like voice dialogues, highly destructible assets, and a fleshed-out story.

The game boasts of a lengthy campaign that features an elaborate and well-developed story. Its world houses highly destructible elements that help make the aftermath of each enemy encounter realistic and believable. Speaking of encounters, the game also takes a page out of F.E.A.R.'s playbook with its intelligent AI design. It adapts its tactics to better combat you; it feels like you're playing against human-controlled characters.

After completing levels, you get an extra game mode called Incursion Mode that features higher difficulty, but comes with greater bonuses for completing them. Given that it's based on GZDoom, you also get full support for custom mods. As for when it will come out, its developer has posted a rather humorous August 22, 2255 release date. Hopefully, the month and day parts turn out to be accurate.

An interesting new shooter to look out for

It's amazing what an aging game engine can do with some love and support from passionate fans and developers. Selaco is a testament to what the classic Doom game engine is still capable of with modern enhancements in tow. This is a sci-fi shooter that is worth keeping an eye out for when it hopefully comes out soon.
